Victorian Fireplaces
The Victorians readily embraced the use of Cast Iron in Fireplace manufacture and this allowed Ornate Fireplace designs to be created for the mass public. Arched Inserts could be made as small Combination Fireplaces or Bedroom Fireplaces or very large and ornate Chimney Pieces. Most Victorian Fireplaces combined a Cast Iron Insert with a Timber Mantel or Surround, usually made from Oak or Pine, but sometimes from Carrara Marble or Cast Iron. Fireplace Hearths were usually Tiled Hearths, Slate Hearths or Granite Hearths. From the mid 19th. Century Fireplace Tiles became very popular, however the two rows of 6" Hand Painted Tiles were purely decorative. Victorian Tiled Fireplaces reached the height of their popularity between about 1880 and 1901 although they continued to be used into the Edwardian and Art Nouveau periods.
